One of the smallest communities in Napa Valley, Oakville is tiny enclave with a population of just over 70 residents. It is coveted for its extremely limited real estate, privacy and world-acclaim of surrounding vineyards and wineries.Formally declared a distinct appellation within the Napa Valley AVA in 1993,the Oakville AVA produces outstanding Bordeaux varietals, most notably Cabernet Sauvignon. As a result,most of the Oakville areaand its local economy are dedicated to the wine industry.The first vineyard was planted back in 1868 by H.W. Crabb who saw the potential of the fertile area close to the nearby Napa River. He established the To Kalonvineyard, which today produces some of the best and most coveted grapes in the Napa Valley.The present vineyard is owned bythe Robert Mondavi Winery and grape grower Andy Beckstoffer. The Oakville AVAis currently home to two dozen wineries and over 5,000 acres of vineyard that all lie within the boundaries of the Oakville AVA.
Despite the size, Oakville offers residents everything they could need for that picturesque Napa Valley lifestyle. The town is home to one of America’s revered gourmet food stores, the Oakville Grocery Company, which has been selling local fair since 1881. You will find everything you need for your kitchen, from breads, cheeses, fresh salads and sandwiches.The Robert Mondavi Winery is quite popular and has become a focal point of entertainment as it hosts regular concerts with well-known acts, wine tastings and other fun events throughout the year.Other notable Oakville wineries include, Screaming Eagle, Far Niente / Nickel & Nickel, Opus One, and Silver Oak.Heitz Wine Cellars’ Martha’s Vineyard is also located within the Oakville appellation
